Starting a vegetable garden is a fun and rewarding way to enjoy fresh, healthy food right from your backyard. If you're new to gardening, don't worry! Here's a simple guide to help you begin your gardening adventure. Why Start a Vegetable Garden? - **Fresh and Healthy:** Vegetables from your garden are fresher and healthier than those you buy from the store. (Remember store bought vegetables are delayed getting to the stores and sometimes stay on a refrigerated trailer prior to ending up in stores) - **Save Money:** Growing your own food can help save money on grocery bills. - **Fun Activity:** Gardening is a relaxing and enjoyable activity that can be done alone or with family and friends. -**Quality time:** While gardening has its great rewards, the quality time spent making memories and enjoying fresh vegetables is what truly makes your garden what it is! Getting Started **Plan your garden out on paper:** -Map out the area you wish to have your garden and draw the replica on paper (Remember sun is key to a successful garden) - Pick the vegetables that you wish to grow and draw them in the area on your paper (plant easy vegetables that require less maintenance and early rewarders like Tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and many more). - Once Your design/drawing is complete and you have chosen your vegetables seeds, you are now ready to begin the next step 2. **Take your drawing and bring it to life:** -Use the area that was pre planned on paper and bring it to life, replicate that drawing in real life (raised beds, pots or just a spot that has lots of soil on the ground, remember keep it easy as larger gardens require a lot more maintenance) remember there is no such thing as a perfect garden -Once area is prepared you want to make sure your soil is 3-4 inches or more thick as rain will pack it down (Use a small hand rake to bring the soil back to a fluffy state and allows you to maneuver around the vegetables, this garden set can be purchased on our store page) this helps continue the growth of the roots without having compacted soil. -If these steps are completed you are ready to move on to the next step 3. **Planting your seeds into the soil:** - read the label on each seed package you have decided to plant as vegetables have different spacing etc. - Plant your seeds as per your design while following the spacing requirement and depth of planting the seed (remember your design on paper will have all your vegetables labeled On it so it will be easier to indicate what was planted in that area while growing) -Once completed and seeds have been covered again with soil, provide a light watering over the garden (The misting setting on Garden hose attachment works best but any light watering would work) 4. **Maintain garden:** - Now that your garden is on its way, now comes maintenance. - provide water as needed and the key is to not over water (small damping of the soil works great for new seeds) -As your plants start to grow beautifully, adjust watering as they will start to need more water and avoid watering directly on the plant on a sunny day as this could kill or burn Your plants. (The best watering is first thing in the early morning or when the sun is going down) -Once plants are ready for harvest, pick and enjoy! Preparing Your Garden **Soil is Key:** Use a mix of garden soil, manure (Sheep or cow) and compost to give your plants the nutrients they need . **Watering:** Water your plants in the morning or evening when the sun is not too strong. **Spacing:** Follow the spacing guidelines on the seed packets or plant tags to avoid overcrowding. Planting Your Vegetables **Read the Seed Packets:** They provide valuable information on when and how to plant. **Planting:** Some vegetables can be planted directly in the garden, while others may need to be started indoors. **Labeling:** Use labels to remember where and what you planted.
